The Rattle or Scrape of Glottis
Coughing is an illustration of the wrong kind of “stroke,”which has been called the “glottal shock.” Garcia`s formula for obtaining “the sensation of the glottic action” was: “Coughing almost imperceptibly, “(Garcia ,p. 5).This gentle “popping,”
however, far from being a shock, is a beneficial exercise for the muscles of the valve.
The single “pops,” which must be very gentle and without apparent movement of any of the organs of speech, can be speeded into a “rattle,” or “glottal scrape.” According to Allan Rogers Lindquest, the “glottal scrape” or Scraspning was a part of the method of Gillis Bratt, the great Swedish authority. This exercise is especially good for breathy pupils. A breathy tone can hardly be initiated by the tension required for the rattle. However, it is an ideal tension which adjusts the glottis without tightening the throat, and as such benefits students who are too tense. The voiceless rattle may rumble into a tone by adding phonation. This approach is the opposite of that described in Par. 182. The “imaginary h” is more suitable for attacking high notes, where tension is danger, and the “rattle” is better for low notes, indeed it builds the low part of the range. It is especially beneficial for low voices.
